Mission to Enernova (DIY Pack)

Assessing Potential and Developing Performance
Julie Hay and Peter Emery

Mission to Enernova can be used as a team building simulation to explore group dynamics, information handling, planning, decision-making, communication and influencing skills, team working, presentation skills, flexibility, contingency planning, risk management, time management and working under pressure. It can be used as a team development activity or run as a simulation within an assessment or development centre.

The activity requires that participants, working on their own or in teams, budget, plan and present this strategy for making a journey from one fictitious planet to another. In this way, it is possible to observe and assess the quality of their decisions on what route to follow, which crew members and equipment to take with them, what levels of fuel, food and stores they will need, and of course how they handle disruptions during the journey.

The opening of the initial Participant Brief reads:
"You are situated on Homebase, a station in a galaxy far from Earth, where you work for a space exploration agency. News has come in of the discovery of a new planet, Enernova, where there is a valuable source of powerful new energy that will enable your communities to thrive for the next millennium. This is a commercial opportunity for your organisation. However, you have heard that your competitors are also aware of this discovery and are expected to reach Enernova within the next 50 light years."
Previously published by Gower in a hardcopy version that is now out of print, the Sherwood Publishing version is designed as a do-it-yourself pack. This keeps the cost down and allows purchasers to make as many copies of the various materials as they wish.

This package contains everything needed to run a range of activities. It is presented in the form of 7 PDFs: an Introduction to the nature of the simulation and how it might be used; notes on how to prepare the materials and run the simulations; a set of Facilitator Briefs for the various elements; a set of Participant Briefs; and a set of Participant Review forms that can be issued at the end of each stage of the overall activity.
It is possible to run the complete activity through the stages of: dealing with the information provided, the planning activity, making a presentation about the plan, changing the plan, and finally making the trip itself. As participants make the trip, they work to a large map on which have been placed sets of incident cards at various points on their journey.  The pack can also be used to run any of these activities separately. You can select just those components that match your assessment or development needs.

Julie Hay has over 40 years’ experience in the public and private sectors in the UK as a manager, trainer and consultant, supplemented with much experience of consulting on assessment/development centre design and providing training internationally. She has an MPhil for research into the competencies of effective managers and is a Chartered Manager, Chartered Management Institute. She is the author of The Gower Assessment and Development Centre, a three-volume collection of materials for assessment centres (also available in Dutch and Polish), and Simulations for Assessment, Training and Development, a photocopiable manual plus CD-ROM.

Peter Emery is now retired but was an independent consultant with over 30 years managerial and human resource experience with several blue chip organisations, including periods as a training specialist and personnel manager. He contributed particularly to the graphics within the publication.

The Gower Assessment and Development Centre

At last – all you need to run your own assessment or development centres. A complete set of photocopiable materials!

Designed by Julie Hay and originally published by Gower (Oct 1997), it is now available from Taylor & Francis.

Assessment and development centres can provide organisations with a huge amount of useful, validated data about the potential of new recruits or the performance and development needs of established managers. Until now it has been time-consuming, complex and costly to identify and design suitable exercises and to plan and administer a centre. This is no longer the case! The Gower Assessment and Development Centre is designed to save you time and money and dramatically increase the effectiveness of any centre that you run. You simply select what you need and copy it – as often as you want.

The three manuals offer expert guidance and detailed checklists on the administration of the centre and the briefing of assessors, observers and assessees, along with a wide and varied range of exercises - complete with evaluation guidelines. The simulations span a range of levels so you can use them for junior employees through to senior managers. The exercises are based on proven lists of core management and professional competencies relevant to all organisations.

The material is designed for HR professionals developing their first centre, as well as those looking to expand and improve existing centres. You can put together a complete centre or simply add items to your own materials. The activities will be equally relevant whether you use your own list of competencies or rely on the ones provided in the manual.

Volume 1
Planning and Administration contains important programme information such as:

• a range of reproducible assessment documentation
• sample programmes for an assessment and a development centre
• guidance on how to introduce and publicize your centres
• ‘lecture notes’ for briefing participants and assessors
• an administrative blueprint, including flowcharts, to help you run your centres
• ideas for evaluating the success of your centres.

Volume 2
Assessment Activities contains full documentation for the participants, the assessors and the programme manager for running a range of assessment simulations of:

• meetings where co-operation is called for
• meetings where participants have conflicting aims
• activities where participants must plan for contingencies and handle interruptions
• presentations and talks
• one-to-one interviews
• report and proposal writing exercises.

Volume 3
In-Tray Simulations contains full documentation for the participants, the assessors and the programme manager for running in-tray simulations of varying levels of complexity. Each exercise contains:

• briefing papers to explain the exercise to participants
• background information
• items of correspondence, reports, messages and so on for participants to deal with
• guidelines to help assessors evaluate the actions taken and relate these to assessment criteria.

Each volume is available separately or as part of a three volume collection.

Simulations for Assessment, Training and DevelopmenT

Manual and CD ROM  -  four simulations designed to provide a wide choice of settings for your training or assessment activities.

Designed by Julie Hay  and originally published by Gower (2004).

This pack is now published as a Do-It-Yourself PDF download package by Sherwood Publishing (See below).

The Dubchinzaneth Building Project
Your participants are briefed to imagine they work as part of the management group of a charity, tasked with providing help following a major international disaster. Which of the reconstruction projects will they choose? How will they plan the construction? What unexpected problems will they face as the project goes live and how will the team tackle them?

The Nasmullin Product Development Project
Nasmullin Enterprises is an established multinational manufacturer of food, toys and clothing. As members of the management team, your participants are tasked with championing a new product development project. Which project will the team pick and how will they plan and manage the development of the product overseas in the face of threats to financial stability, sabotage and legal action?

The Valleys Local Authorities Merger
Your participants are asked to imagine that they are managers in a Local Authority. They need to select a project team to make the merger with their neighbouring authority run successfully. How will they convince their colleagues of their choices for the team and how then will they plan and run the merger, collectively, in the face of human and external problems not foreseen in their planning?

The Brabent Hospital Trusts Merger
Participants are faced with a Government decision to merge their Hospital Trust with a neighbouring Trust. Their job is to choose a merger project team and convince their colleagues of their choices. Then, working together, they need to plan the merger and as the plan unfolds, tackle the problems as they arise, some human, some technical and some very unexpected.

Part One of the manual includes a complete set of guidance materials for running the simulations for an assessment or a development centre - all you need to administer the simulations, brief the assessors and the candidates. And you can choose whether to run a linked sequence of activities or to mix and match across the four settings.

Part Two includes guidance materials for using the simulations to train and develop the members of a team, or alternatively, team leaders and managers. Use them before, during or after the training, to identify needs, check learning, or let them practice applying the lessons.

Part Three contains copies of all materials for running the simulations, for participants, centre managers and trainers. Copies are available on the CD ROM in two versions: one with the coding system for ease of administration when you run a centre; the other version without codes so you can use them as training handouts in whatever way you choose.

Choose a simulation with a storyline that is familiar to the participants, if you want to keep your training or assessing close to home. On the other hand, choose a simulation with a context outside the participants' experience if you want them to demonstrate potential rather than simply following custom or mimicking (possibly bad) practice. Whichever option you choose, the complexity of these simulations makes them a perfect way to assess and/or develop a wide range of core skills, including planning, communication, decision-making, teamworking, leadership and, importantly, all of the nuances associated with them. And you can decide your own list of factors to assess against or use those provided in the pack, for managers or for professionals.
